As a current member of a conservative, reformed, protestant church, I found your discussion very enlightening; however,I am certain that my brain has been poisoned by the onslaught of current events. Concepts such as "loyalty" and "transactional" have become trigger words which lead me to imagine parallels--literary or otherwise--to our current "king". I wish there was an on/off switch! But I digress…good work!
I think it’s a true parallel to consider, so it’s not strange that your brain wants to go there! It would be nice to turn it off but I think it’s healthy that you’re willing to ask questions or draw hard conclusions when it’s uncomfortable.
